Basic Exchange 2013 Requirements and Prerequisites

Exchange 2013 server requirements

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Windows Server 2012 Standard (full GUI)
  • Minimum of 2 CPUs with 2 cores each
  • For CAS and Mailbox roles, 8GB memory minimum; Recommend 16GB or higher
  • Page file = Amount of RAM + 10MB
  • System (OS) partition = 120GB
  • Data partition = Total size of all legacy EDBs + 30-40%

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation
  • Install Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 Runtime
  • Restart the server
  • Install .NET Framework 3.5 Features
  • Install all Windows Updates (including .NET Framework 4.5 if Windows Server 2012).  Restart.  Repeat until no updates remain.

NOTE: I understand that there are many hardware configurations that can be recommended, however, the items above are fairly consistent with all of projects I manage. Your suggestions are welcomed as I am always seeking to improve.
